Did you know that babies with sleep problems may have an increased risk of anxiety and emotional problems?
According to a study of childhood sleep and mental health in children by Australian researchers, babies with sleep problems have up to three times the chance of having mental health and anxiety problems in the childhood stage from 4 to 10 years old.
Researchers sampled 1507 first-time moms and babies and found that 1 in 5 babies had significant sleep problems during the first year. The mothers were describing the behavior of their babies at 3.6,9 and 12 months and then were interviewed about the behavior when their babies were 4 or 10 years old.
56% were found to have moderate sleep problems and 19.5% had severe sleep problems. And compared to babies who stopped having sleep problems, those with moderate and severe problems were 3 times more likely to have emotional problems at age 4.
This shows us once again that healthy sleep habits are really important in our children's development. Giving them the learn to rest and sleep for themselves is one of the best gifts we can give them.
